Several bills were passed during the 83rd Legislation Session relating to school safety and security. The following sections detail these bills while drawing attention to their implications for schools.

HB 347: Cell Phones

Related to prohibiting using a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle on school property.
HB 1009: School Marshal

Related to the creation of a new category of law enforcement officer who shall be designated a school marshal, the training and appointment of certain employees of a school district or open-enrollment charter school as school marshals, and the rights, restrictions, limitations, and responsibilities of school marshals; authorizing the imposition of a fee.
SB 393: Criminal Procedures/Graduated Sanctions

Related to the criminal procedures related to children who commit certain Class C misdemeanors.
SB 460: Mental/Emotional Disorders

Related to training for public school teachers in the detection and education of students at risk for suicide or with other mental or emotional disorders and the inclusion of mental health concerns in coordinated school health efforts.
SB 1556: School Safety Task Force

Related to the establishment of a school safety certification program and the School Safety Task Force.
