School Safety Law Toolkit

Senate Bill 741

Effective Date: September 1, 2021

Establishes that written regulations may not require a school marshal for a school district or open-enrollment charter school, private school, or public junior college to store a handgun in a locked container while on duty. A school marshal may carry a concealed handgun or possess the handgun on school grounds in a locked and secured safe or other locked and secured location. A handgun carried or possessed by a school marshal must be loaded with frangible, TCOLE approved ammunition only. (Removed the requirement that written regulations for a school marshal with regular, direct contact with students stores their handgun in a locked and secured safe, within the immediate reach when the marshal is conducting their primary duty.)
