Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its Impact on Accurate Threat Assessments Lunch & Learn
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced significantly in recent years, with remarkable progress in machine learning, natural language processing, voice cloning, and a range of other services. AI is increasingly used in ways that directly impact school communities and law enforcement.
For Safety or School Behavioral Threat Assessment (S/SBTA) teams, these developments present both opportunities and new challenges. High-risk and vulnerable individuals, detached from their environment and seeking connection in the digital world, may turn to digital platforms and form “synthetic relationships.” These relationships could appear to be other users but may in fact be AI-driven or even maliciously designed chatbots. Furthermore, when AI is used to generate Deepfake intimate images/videos or images of weapons, it poses an immense danger to all. To gain deeper insight into the power and capacity of AI, S/SBTA teams must stay up to date with quickly evolving AI technology.
These sessions will provide a practical overview of how AI is being used today, what S/SBTA teams need to be aware of, and how to best recognize the risks associated with its use.

Session 1 Artificial Intelligence in the Modern Digital Landscape
Establishing the Foundation
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming part of daily life, influencing how people communicate, learn, create content, and access information. Despite its growing popularity, there still can be misconceptions regarding what AI is, how it functions, and what its current capabilities and limitations are. This Lunch and Learn will establish an understanding of AI by examining its early evolution to modern Large Language Models (LLMs), while separating realities from misinformation. Participants will learn why these rapid developments are particularly significant for school communities and multidisciplinary school behavioral threat assessment teams, where this session will establish the foundation for the series and provide context for the topics explored in future sessions.

Session 2 Navigating the AI Landscape: Platforms, Capabilities, and Risks
A Practical Overview for School Behavioral Threat Assessment and School Safety Teams
The rapid growth of AI has resulted in many different tools becoming widely available to youth and adults alike. This Lunch and Learn will provide a practical overview of major AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek, while examining how each underlying LLM responds differently to user requests. Participants will explore AI safety guardrails, moderation techniques, known limitations, as well as how individuals may engage in harmful activities by bypassing these guardrails.

Session 3 Detecting AI-Generated and Manipulated Content
Digital Literacy, Synthetic Media, and Emerging School Safety Concerns
AI-generated content has become increasingly common across academic, social, and digital environments, making it increasingly difficult to differentiate between real and manipulated media. This Lunch and Learn will examine how artificial intelligence is being used to create text, images, video, audio, and other forms of digital content. Participants will learn to recognize common indicators of AI-generated writing, as well as how to detect AI-generated images, video, and any sort of manipulation. The session will also explore the growing importance of digital literacy and verification skills to help safety teams, educators, parents/caregivers, and youth assess online content through a safer lens.

Session 4 Artificial Intelligence and the Changing Landscape of Academic Misconduct
Detection Challenges, Evasion Tactics, and Practical Responses
Artificial Intelligence has significantly altered the landscape of academic integrity, creating new challenges for educators. This Lunch and Learn will explore how AI is being utilized to generate academic work, the tools and strategies schools are currently using to identify AI-assisted submissions, and some of the limitations associated with these approaches. Participants will examine how students are adapting to detection measures and gain a deeper understanding of the false positives, false negatives, and the importance of establishing a balanced approach to address academic integrity concerns in an AI-driven environment.

Session 5 Artificial Intelligence, Exploitation, and Digital Victimization
Impersonation, Exploitation, and Synthetic Content Concerns
While AI offers some legitimate applications, it is also increasingly utilized to facilitate harm and exploitive behavior. This Lunch and Learn will examine how AI is being used to generate non-consensual intimate images and produce manipulated media that may be used for extortion, impersonation, or social engineering. Participants will explore behavioral and digital patterns associated with these concerns and the impact it can have on victims and school communities. This session will also address reporting considerations and multidisciplinary response strategies.

Session 6 AI Safety Gaps and Emerging School Behavioral Threat Assessment Concerns
Real-World Gaps, Case Examples, and Future Considerations
AI developers continue to establish safeguards intended to reduce harmful or inappropriate use of their platforms; however, these measures are not always effective. This Lunch and Learn will examine how AI safety guardrails are designed, where they may fail, and how users attempt to bypass restrictions through techniques such as jailbreaks and prompt injection. Drawing from SST-informed case examples and participant-submitted scenarios, the session will explore how AI-related concerns are increasingly presenting within school behavioral threat assessment and school safety contexts. Participants will engage in multidisciplinary analysis of real-world challenges and discuss practical approaches for building sustainable AI literacy practices that support effective assessment, intervention, and prevention efforts.
Please Note: This session is open to public ISDs, open-enrollment charter schools, junior colleges, law enforcement, and state agencies that support Texas schools. Vendors and contractors are not permitted to register for this session.
Not eligible for TCOLE credit.
