COVID-19 Cancellation Notice

Texas is a large state and we are closely monitoring the status of COVID-19. Should an ESC or host decide to close we will notify our participants on the cancellation via the e-mail they used to sign-up for the training. UPDATE: With increased news reports about the growing number of cases nationally of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) we have decided to cancel all trainings effective immediately until May 1, 2020.

School Threat Assessment Training

With the passage of Senate Bill 11, Texas now joins the short list of states in our country to legislatively mandate the implementation of threat assessment teams in its public school districts and open-enrollment charter schools. Threat Assessment provides a proactive, evidence-based approach for identifying individuals who may pose a threat and for providing interventions before a violent incident occurs.

The board of trustees of each school district is now required to establish a threat assessment team to serve at each campus of the district. The Board must also adopt policies and procedures for the teams that are consistent with the model policies and procedures developed by the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC). In addition, each team is required to complete training provided by the TxSSC or a Regional Education Service Center.

We are offering Threat Assessment training to enable districts to meet this requirement. Beginning September 1, 2019, the training includes two steps*:

  1. Take the online "Behavioral Threat Assessment" course through the School Safety Learning Portal: This course will introduce key concepts of threat assessment and is a prerequisite to register for for this training.
    School Safety Learning Portal
    Behavioral Threat Assessment Online Course
  2. Register for and attend an in-person School Threat Assessment Training: After successfully completing the online course, each participant will be given a unique code that will enable them to register for the in-person course.
  3. *To register for the School Threat Assessment training, individuals must follow the steps noted above.

Please note: This training is open to public ISDs, open enrollment charter schools, school-based law enforcement, and any state agency that serves on an identified Threat Assessment team. Please note that in order to serve as many districts and charter schools, no more than 5 participants per district (ISD) or charter school will be able to attend the in-person training. Slots will be filled in the order received. Due to limited seating, vendors and contractors are not permitted to register or attend the training. Registrant must be identified as a district/charter school Threat Assessment team member.

Completion of both the online course and the in-person training will meet the new State requirements for threat assessment training. To learn more about the new requirements view the Threat Assessment video in the Legislative Guidance Video Series.

**Please note, a Digital Threat Assessment Training will take place the day after. If interested in attending, you must register separately for the training.

*Must attend entire training to be eligible to receive seven hours TCOLE Credit.
